No one was concerned until I started the first grade. My parents and my teacher kept telling me I was smart but could not understand why I was having so much trouble with reading, writing and other tasks that most of the other kids in my class were easily accomplishing. My teacher kept telling my mom that I needed to "stay focused" and "pay attention."
We learned of a tutor who was trained to teach kids with learning problems. For the next four years she came to my school three times a week to teach me a new way to learn to read and write. It was a slow process, but gradually I began to make progress. I still meet with a special tutor every day. She helps me learn ways that are different from what is taught in a regular class room. This year I was able to read a Stephen King novel, one of my first goals.
I hope this little book will help you learn more about yourself if you have a learning disorder. Most important, I hope it will remind you to never let your problems keep you from achieving your goals.
Remember…if you cut open an apple seed you will not find an apple. It needs good soil, water and a lot of loving care to become what it was meant to be.

Reviews:
Welcome to Dyslexic Park by Tyler Lester is an inspirational and colorful little book which presents the many frustrations of dyslexic children and how they might be overcome. This will be a great book for helping children to understand and discuss their own learning problems and concerns with teachers and parents. If carefully used and supplemented, Dyslexic Park should be a strong motivation to more successful reading and increased self-esteem.

"I found Welcome to Dyslexic Park by Tyler Lester to be charming, witty, and well-written. It also shows a lot of insight into the nature of learning disabilities and the impact they have on those who suffer from them. The other thing I found to be accurate and important about this book is the emphasis on remaining hopeful and not giving up. I highly recommend it."

"I shared the reading of this entertaining, informative and cleverly written book, which has illustrations that stimulate conversation, with a sixth grade client. The book kept his attention and one of his comments was "this reminds me of what I used to do in the third grade." Sharing this book should be a must for every teacher, tutor and therapist."
